Newark: A Gathering of Voices

In collaboration with Newark Arts Council and Gallery Aferro, we are excited to present a reading of the contributions to the Before I Die wall, arranged into poetry by poets Vincent Toro & Gretna Wilkinson.
You can still come write on the wall this Thursday until Saturday, between 12 and 6pm!

Poets
Vincent Toro is a Puerto Rican poet, playwright, stage performer, and educator living in The Bronx. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Rutgers University. For the last 15 years, he has taught poetry and theater and collaborated on public art projects in schools, colleges, and community centers in New York, New Jersey and Texas. From 2006 to 2011, Vincent was Performing Arts Director at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center in San Antonio, Texas.
Vincent has also been named an Honorable Mention for the Allen Ginsberg Poetry Prize and The Arts Foundation of San Antonio’s Literary Prize. Vincent has also been awarded an associate artist residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in Florida, is a member of Sandra Cisneros’s Macondo Writer’s Foundation, and serves as member of the board for GlobalWriters, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting literacy through the integration of technology and the performing arts in schools throughout the U.S.
Gretna Wilkinson was born and raised in Guyana South America, and began her teaching career as a missionary teacher in the jungles there. Her newest book, Opening the Drawer, was published in October 2011. She holds a Doctorate in Literature from Drew University and was recently named Monmouth County Arts Educator of the Year. She currently teaches at the Visual and Performing Arts Academy of Red Bank Regional High School where she directs of the Creative Writing program.
